I’ve already talked about my running and blogging goals for this year, but recently I’ve decided I want to add something else to the list for 2017. I’ve been Thinking Out Loud about this for some time, but it’s nice to say it out loud.
Instead of calling this a goal or resolution I think I’m going to call it a promise.
Definition of promise
1a : a declaration that one will do or refrain from doing something specified
I have decided that I’m going to make a promise to myself to get to one wild place a month for the rest of the year. I’m giving the term wild place a broad definition. Naturally I’m qualifying true wild places like wilderness and mountain tops, but I’m also including local(ish) parks with trail systems and naturally occurring trees. Some of this includes traveling out of state, but a lot of it will include exploring places within Georgia.
Here’s why I’m making this promise…
I was raised in the middle of the woods and I miss being outdoors. Atlanta is beautiful with lots of parks and recreation areas, but its not the same as being on a trail in true nature.
There is such a peace and perspective that comes from being in wild places. Whether it’s a 20 minute walk by the river or a 10 mile hike up a mountain, being in wild places lends itself to reflective thinking and a relaxed mental state.
Places I’m excited about getting to…
Appalachian Trail/Springer Mountain
Since we live less than two hours from the AT I think we have to check it out. This is another reason I’m looking forward to not training for a marathon this fall. My summers can be full of local adventures.
I can’t wait to climb mountains, see lakes and feel wind rushing by the cliffs. The Mr. and I keep adding places to our list and I love it.
Tallulah Gorge State Park
Another day trip to North Georgia!
If I could pick up and move anywhere it would be here. We are currently planning a trip to the Breckenridge, Vail and Leadville area. I love getting in the mountains and I’m looking forward to spending more time in this area of Colorado. Last year’s trip was just a taste.
Chattahoochee River Recreation Areas
I fell in love with running on these trails and I’m looking forward to getting back to them. There are so many river areas that are close to the city but truly feel like you are in another world.
It’s no secret that I love this place and I’m excited to go back. The Mr. and I had so much fun exploring this beautiful state last year and we are ready to go back. This year’s trip will include Crater Lake and the Three Sisters.
There is so much natural beautiful all around us, but it’s easy to get caught up in other things. I’m looking forward to adventure this year and seeing new places.
What’s your favorite wild place?
