I feel like to some extent I have some unfinished business with this race as well because I learned so much. After all, I spent roughly the whole of 2015 preparing myself mentally and physically for this race. I thought it would be fun to think back and then look forward at all the reasons why I am already so excited for a race that is months and months away.
Round 2. I already know what to expect from the city, the course, the expo, the crowds, race day logistics, etc. so that makes me a bit more relaxed. Since I have already experienced the big marathon atmosphere once it makes it so much easier for me to look forward to this race instead of being nervous.
RMHC. I am really passionate about the Ronald McDonald House Charity organization and consider it a great honor to run for Team RMHC again. They are an incredible organization and running for them on race day makes the whole weekend that much more meaningful. The sense of community among the team also makes the marathon mean that much more because we are all supporting each other to do better and go farther for RMHC. To donate to Team RMHC and help me hit my fundraising goal click here. Thank you in advance!
Food. What kind of self proclaimed foodie would I be if I didn’t mention all the eats?! I’m so excited to go back to HUB 51 and Little Goat and also to eat all the pizza. The Mr. and I will definitely be trying some new places this time around, but will not be able to push aside our old favorites.
Crowds. The spectators at the Chicago Marathon are on another level. This race really is the people’s marathon because the entire city is out in full force at every single mile of the course. The crowd support at this race is incredibly moving and people are so generous and thoughtful. I have also never heard so many strangers cheer for me and yell my name. The energy of this race makes the running so much easier.
Marathon Season Opener. Since this race is the first weekend of October it is really the season opener for the rest of fall race season. As you know I will be running the TCS NYC Marathon this November too, so having Chicago as an opener is amazing. Read more about my excitement to run NYC here. I don’t know what other races (if any) I will be running this fall, but the fact that I get to run Chicago before NYC is the best.
PR Potential. I don’t have another marathon on my calendar before this race which means I have plenty of time to work towards my year goal of clenching a PR. I don’t think it will be too hard, but I know it is not going to be easy. This course lends to the potential for a PR because it’s flat, the amenities are incredible, it’s logistically easy to navigate and is a fast course.
I’ve already locked down my hotel room and am ready to take on Chicago for the second year in a row. Even though the race is months away and I won’t start officially marathon training for a while, it is so exciting to think about the things to come. I’m ready to #ownchicago!
