Ya’ll know I am obsessed with Colorado and that we spent some time there earlier in the month so it’s only fitting that I share some of my favorite eats from our trip. My husband and I really enjoy planning out meals on our vacations so they add to the experience and become part of our memories.
The food scene in Colorado is eclectic and that is definitely the vibe in Breck too. We had a lot of great food, but here are some of my favorites.
Just thinking about this meal makes my heart sing. Modis is in the heart of Breck on Main Street and located in an old building with such character. I loved the building at first glance, but the food was even better.
I started the meal with a bourbon smash. It was the perfect mix of bourbon, tart and sweet.
We had wanted to order the grilled pork belly appetizer, but they were already out for the day so we passed on ordering something else.
The Mr. ordered the fish of the day which looked great while I ordered the lemon herb chicken. It was served with chimichurri squash, crispy cumin corn grit cake, smokey tomato puree and finished with a lemon oil. Every element was incredible on it’s own, but everything together was like a little orchestra.
We ordered the strawberry lemonade cake to go and ate it in bed relaxing after a long day on the mountain. This was no ordinary cake. The cake was light and filled with a strawberry mascarpone mixture then topped with vanilla bean buttercream. There was even a zippy lemon sauce on the side.
I’m not kidding when I say we ate here three times over the course of our vacation. The first time we got ice cream which was delicious, but the second and third times we got coffee. I had the salty caramel mocha and the carmello coffee. Both were lovely and not too sweet.
I love a place that makes homemade cakes and pies everyday. I fell in love with their coffee cake and had it two days in a row. Everything was fresh and clearly baked with love.
This place is a little off the beaten path, but was so worth the short drive from Main Street. The distillery serves everything in small plates which I love because then you get to sample a little of everything. I also appreciate that each component of each dish was carefully thought out and crafted.
I started with the alpine picnic cocktail which was Breckenridge pear vodka, Teakoe watermelon tea, citrus, cranberry bitters, citrus sugar oil.
For our meal we ordered the deviled eggs, pig brisket and campanelle. Everything was perfect. I’ve never tasted a more perfect deviled egg. These were heavy on garlic flavor, but super light. The pork was bulgogi with the tiniest hot peppers I have ever seen. The campanelle was served with walnuts, parm and lemon. It was heavenly.
Naturally we rounded off our meal with two desserts: a bourbon coke float with cherry syrup and homemade vanilla ice cream with a fois gras caramel sauce. Both were absolutely perfect!
I really enjoyed that all the meals we had used locally sourced items and fresh food. It was evident in the quality of the dishes. I wish more places would put this much thought into meals that they prepare and sell for others. I always appreciate eating food that is someone’s art. A good meal should always taste like a masterpiece of flavors.
