I committed to running the Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World Marathon weekend months ago, but lately it’s been on my mind. I’m both over the moon excited and completely terrified!
Not familiar with the Dopey Challenge at WDW? You run the 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon on back to back mornings. It’s a total of 4 races, a lot of miles and 6 medals. You can read more about my initial registration excitement here!
I always tend to feel more confident in a race if I’ve done something similar in a training run. I just want to have it filed away in my brain that I can do it.
I know I will be exhausted by the end of the challenge, but part of the fun will be pushing my body and race day strategy. The Mr. will be running the 5k and 10k with me which is an added bonus. He hasn’t ran a runDisney race with me since last year’s Wine & Dine “half” Marathon.
Right now I’m running more miles in a week than I ever have! Well, technically I’m tapering for Chicago, but you know what I mean.
My goal is to run strong for the Chicago and NYC Marathons then start on Dopey specific training. This basically translates to back to back long runs and at least one week where my runs mimic the challenge (3, 6, 10, 20).
It seems like a lot to think about already, but everything will be here before I know it. I also one of those people that likes to have races and experiences build on each other.
I would always rather plan for a specific race months and months in advance as opposed to determining race specific training 6 weeks out. It just doesn’t work for me.
Right now I’m just filing all my high mileage weeks as mental and physical strength for the big event in January. In a couple months, I will be able to look back with confidence.
Have you ever done a running challenge like this?
Any tips for me?
