The holiday season is just around the corner. If you don’t have a self care routine now is the perfect time to start one. We spend so much time rushing around that we never stop to take care of ourselves. How can we take care of others without doing these things?! Yeah, I am not sure either.
I think there is a misconception that self care has to be elaborate, time consuming or expensive, but that could not be further from the truth. Self care is really just about making yourself a priority and it’s easier than you think. Whether you’re a single gal (or guy) or have a whole lot of kids to care for you can implement a couple self care habits that will make day to day tasks a little easier.
One of the best ways you can take care of yourself is by taking care of your body. Eating nutritious foods gives you energy, heals your body from stressors and maintains overall health. Embrace the foods that are in season like pumpkin or butternut squash and don’t be afraid to throw a roast in the oven to braise. Not only are these foods comforting, but they are nourishing as well.
Time For Yourself
Making time for yourself can be challenging, but sometimes as much as 10 minutes can make all the difference. Curl up with a magazine or book, do a quick yoga flow, listen to your favorite podcast or relish in the silence. Carving out a little time for yourself just to exist without having to serve the needs of someone else is a great way to take care of yourself.
Implement the spa treatment at home. Listen to relaxing music, light a candle, put on a face mask, moisturize your hands or feet, give yourself a mani/pedi. One of my favorite ways to unwind after a stressful day is to take a hot bath. It’s the perfect time to light a candle, put on your favorite music, catch up on a tv show or read a book. Even if you only have 20 minutes you will go to bed feeling relaxed and prime your body for some quality rest.
As the months get colder there is something so therapeutic about lighting a candle or putting oils into my aroma therapy oil diffuser. They have a way of instantly changing the mood. For that reason I think they are great tools to implement into self care.
Time With Friends
One of the best ways to take care of yourself is to be around others. Surrounding yourself with like minded and supportive people has a way of feeding your spirit that’s different than relationships you have with your spouse. Laughter with friends makes everything a little better. Schedule time with friends during the week for a boost before the weekend arrives or host a low key chili party to entertain without all the fuss.
We all have different priorities and responsibilities, but you should always make yourself a priority. You owe that to your loved ones. Self care doesn’t have to be anything fancy because ultimately taking care of yourself is the culmination of multiple small things. Don’t be afraid to make time for yourself. You deserve it.
