Vacation means quality family time, seeing new places, enjoying some relaxation and so much more. One of the nasty side effects to vacation can sometimes be weight gain and generally overall feelings of unhealthiness. We all want to enjoy our vacations without having to pay the price, but there are so many ways you can avoid packing on the pounds when you are on vacation.
The Mr. and I travel a lot and we are constantly looking for ways to stay healthy so we don’t feel like we need to detox when we get home. Here are some of the ways we maintain our health while on vacation.
True Vegetables + One Salad a Day
This might sound easy, but can sometimes be challenging. The Mr. and I are always checking out local restaurants because we are self proclaimed foodies, so this usually means a lot of sweets, burgers and other regional specialties. We have a sort of one salad a day rule. We do our best to eat a salad when we are out and always choose some sort of “true” vegetable at dinner. If we want French fries with our burger we will share an order and then order a side of steamed veggies. It might seem silly, but this will save you hundreds of extra calories.
Most restaurant portions are huge, so share a meal if you don’t have a way to store the leftovers. This is also a great way to try dessert without having to feel too terrible about eating it. Opt to share an entrée then order an extra side salad or veggie side.
Research Healthy Options
I am a donut connoisseur ya’ll, but I love healthy foods too. I usually plan out where we will be eating most of our meals in advance because we travel to a lot of destinations for regional eats. If most of the places I know we want to eat at are pretty unhealthy then I look for healthy options at those restaurants or other places to get healthy food. I love finding local juice bars or vegan restaurants. This is also helpful if you have different dietary needs than your spouse or travel partner.
No matter what strategy you try there are plenty of ways to stay healthy while you are on vacation. The last thing you want is to be stressing out over an extra scoop of ice cream or salt water taffy. You also don’t want to derail your healthy habits. No matter what your goals are you can make them happen on vacation. Whether you are on a weight loss journey or are just trying to preserve healthy habits, you can do it!
