While I think gyms have their place and can be super beneficial to some people, I’m not a gym person. I don’t like having to drive somewhere to workout, wait for machines, or feel like someone is looking at me all crazy.
When I first started my fitness journey post college, I was terrified of the gym at my apartment complex. Sure I used it, but I realized quickly that I’m not a gym person. I didn’t get into the atmosphere and the machines and people intimidated me.
About one year before I trained for my first half marathon I bought a treadmill and the rest was history. I was working weird retail hours at the time and wanted to walk or workout on my schedule.
It worked. I was soon hooked on my treadmill and quickly started putting together my home gym. It’s been years since I started it and it continues to grow.
I realize that not everyone has the space or an extra room for a dedicated home gym, but all you really need is a couple items to get started.
Here’s what I have in my home gym:
Yoga Mat: Great for floor workouts of any kind even if you don’t practice yoga.
Light Hand Weights: This is a must for anyone because they don’t take up much space and are so easy to use.
Resistance Bands: These don’t take up much space at all and are so versatile.
Foam Roller: I foam roll daily as part of my wind down routine.
Kettle Bells: If you don’t have room for fancy machines these are a must. I think kettle bells are a great introduction to getting used to working with weights. Read more about them here.
Fitness DVDs/YouTube: Here are some of my faves.
Dumbbells: I like these adjustable ones because they don’t take up as much space as a full set and the Mr. and I both get good use out of them.
Stability Ball: While I don’t use this all the time, when I want it I am really glad I have it.
Hula Hoop: This makes core work so easy. The one I use isn’t weighted, but you could certainly try one for additional resistance.
Inspiration Board: I pin random bits to a bulletin board that motivate me or random workouts I want to have on hand.
Treadmill: I have had my NordicTrack for ages. It’s still going strong 🙂
Spin Bike: I bought an older bike on Craigslist and haven’t looked back. It’s the easiest way for me to cross train and it wasn’t super expensive.
Wreck Bag: This is the newest addition and I love it!
**Tip for Small Spaces: Put all of your items in a plastic tote or small box so when you want to work out you have everything in one place.
I don’t think you have to have an entire room dedicated to a home gym or have fancy machines. Start from where you are. I’ve found that I enjoy working out at home and love popping in for a quick 15-20 minute work out if that’s all the time I have.
My hope is that no matter where you are this might inspire you to add something to your home to make working out more enjoyable.
