Let’s face it. Winter is well, gross. The days are short and the skies are grey. Its so easy to lose motivation and want to wait until spring. Staying active during this time of year has a big pay off though…you will be ready for all the fun that spring and summer brings. It’s so important that you stay motivated during winter, but especially if you want to be ready for spring race season.
We all want to stay indoors and hibernate through the colder months, but your body and mind will thank you if you stay motivated now rather than waiting for spring.
Here are some fun ways to stay motivated during the winter months.
Try Something New. Winter is a great time to try out a new workout or gym. Sign up for a new fitness class and recruit a friend to try it with you. Since it’s cold outside focus on something new that you can do inside, either at home or at the gym. Groupon and Scoutmob are great places to start if you want to try out a new studio or score some classes for cheap.
Do A Challenge. Unless you are living under a rock you have probably seen fitness challenges all over the internet. Do one! Whether it’s a 30 day ab, plank, yoga or squat challenge you should give it a try. Even if you are having a hard time staying motivated doing that you would do during the rest of the year, a 30 day challenge will get you moving and help you see results so you can stay motivated. Think about how much stronger you will be after doing one of these!
Register For A Spring Race. One of the easiest ways to stay motivated is to have a goal to work towards. No matter the distance or location this will help you stay motivated to keep working through the winter blues because you will want to be ready on race day. If spring comes late where you live, think about a racecation or destination race somewhere warmer.
Reward Yourself. Give yourself some sort of reward at the end of the month for goals met. Maybe that’s a pedicure or a new piece of gear for completing a fitness challenge or doing so many workouts a week during the winter months. Loop the rest of your family in so you have someone to hold you accountable and a little friendly competition.
Create The Space. If you have a spare bedroom, empty basement or extra corner in your house turn it into a small home gym. Create the space where you can flourish so you will be able to do the work during the winter. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on fancy equipment because you probably already have some items. Create a vision board with inspiration and your goals pinned to it so you can be reminded of your goals. I have a binder filled with workouts in my “race” room for when I need a pick me up. I print out things I like or tear out articles from a magazine and put them in a plastic sleeve and add to my binder. The binder is portable and is available when you need it. Create the space that you want to be successful in and the rest will be much easier.
No matter where you are in your fitness journey or what your goals are, don’t wait to get started on them. Your life won’t wait! If you want something you should start on it today instead of waiting for spring. There will always be a reason to not put yourself and your health first, but you will find you are a much better you when you take care of yourself.
