Every Christmas I like to make a list of sorts of holiday activities that I want the Mr. and I to do to celebrate Christmas and get in the holiday spirit. This list usually includes seeing the Nutcracker and holiday lights, but this year things are shaping up very differently. Lately we have become so busy and overwhelmed with everything, that I am adjusting our usual holiday plan. I am also so behind on training for the Disneyworld Marathon in January that my focus right now needs to be on getting solid runs in.
The Mr. and I will be going on a 7 day Caribbean Christmas cruise starting on the 19th of December so that means we only have a couple weeks to enjoy Christmas at home before we are on a plane and board the ship. I am so excited for the cruise and ready for a relaxing break from everything, but I still want to enjoy some of my Christmas favorites beforehand. Instead of fancy outings we will be enjoying the Christmas season with more of a staycation twist.
Holiday Baking. Christmas isn’t Christmas without holiday baking. As a girl we always baked through the month of December and I can’t imagine not doing it. This year I have decided that I will be making holiday cookie baskets in lieu of gifts. People don’t bake anything in their homes anymore and I think baking for someone is truly the best way to show you care. Right now I am loving these recipes and can’t wait to make them all!
Chocolate Crinkle Cookies (I want to add peppermint extract)
Holiday Light Neighborhood Run. Our neighborhood is loaded with homes who go all out for the holiday season so I want to take advantage of it. I am hoping to talk the Mr. into a holiday light neighborhood run with me so we can enjoy all the lights. Maybe afterwards we can go by our neighborhood coffee shop for a warm cup of something?
Christmas Movies. We all have our favorites. I personally adore Love Actually, Four Christmases, The Family Stone, Elf and of course Christmas Vacation. I can’t wait to watch them all at home snuggled up with a warm blanket. We watched Four Christmases and The Family Stone last weekend, so we have a couple more to check off. Movie nights or afternoons are exactly what staycations are for!
Festive Sangria. Sangria is the perfect drink to serve at holiday gatherings because it’s fancier than a bottle of wine and nearly everyone will drink it if it’s seasonal. Here’s my new favorite recipe for perfect holiday sangria. It’s the perfect blend of sweet and tart. I made it for Thanksgiving and it was a huge hit. I have a couple functions that I will be taking this to and I hope everyone else loves it too. You would want to make it the night before or morning of your party for the best flavor. Top with the tonic water when you are ready to serve.
2 bottles Cabernet Sauvignon
1/2 cup Brandy
1 cup good quality Apple Cider
1 cup 100% Cranberry Juice
1-2 Oranges, sliced
1-2 Sweet Apples, sliced
Tonic Water, for serving
Hot Chocolate and Holiday Coffee. Christmas is about piping hot mugs of everything seasonal. I am ready to break out the hot chocolate and marshmallows. Coffee is always a good idea. I am dying over these k cups from Trader Joes. I need them. Yum!
Per usual, I am linking up with Amanda over at Running with Spoons. Be sure to check out her blog for all things festive!
